The following tips may come in handy for teachers and students getting into using blogs in instruction.

Start with both post and comment moderation.
Always moderate comments.
Watch out for blog spam. Spam makes moderation a must.
On blogger, turn on the spam protection that requires people to type a word shown as a graphic before their comment is submitted - this is called word verification.

What questions would you like to see addressed in future skypecasts relating to educational blogging? (Each one of these could perhaps be a topic for another skypecast)

What are the biggest obstacles to using blogging in the classroom, and what are possible solutions?
What features would you like to see in a next-generation educational blogging tool?
What the pros and cons of using different email solutions for students? Gaggle? ePals email? Others?
How do we help students transition from teacher/school controlled blogs to self-directed/managed personal blogs i.e myspace? Or do we want to deal with that?

ClassBlogmeister is a free tool created by David Warlick for classroom blogging. Some reasons to consider using it instead of other tools are:

Supports the writing process, teachers can leave comments/feedback behind the scenes for students before articles are published.
Easy and straightforward, doesn't require lots of technical tweaking.
Students have their own blogs: Gives more ownership to students.
Permits full teacher moderation of posts and comments.
Is in use by a lot of teachers, a good support network exists to get help
Is supported by an active and growing discussion list of users at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/classblogmeister/
Because of 5 and 6, above, there is very much a sense of community with teachers and students who use classblogmeister.
Consistency of the interface is very helpful for students who are reading and commenting on the blogs of other students.

Learnerblogs is a free, Wordpress-based service for student blogs.

PRO

Students have their own blogs or may post to a group blog. In the group blog set-up, student posts can be grouped into categories, such as student name, subject, homeroom class etc.
Students can directly post their own blog ideas without going through the teacher as a gatekeeper, while the teacher maintains the ability to monitor all posts and comments prior to publishing.
Has customizability and power of WordPress.
Detailed "how-to" instructions are available for starting a classroom group blog.

Blog tools have different features, so it makes sense to use a database to compare and permit searches according to different characteristics.

Here is a link to a read-only version of a Lazybase database on blogging tools.
